Dutchess County Helpline Staff Receive Elder Abuse Training

Staff from the Dutchess County Dept. of Mental Hygiene received training on the signs of elder abuse as part of a new initiative to let people know that help is available. The training included presentations from Kathy Sheehan, Coordinator, the Mediation Center’s Coalition on Elder Abuse, Pat Sheldon, Dutchess County Protective Services for Adults, Leah Feldman, Domestic Violence Services of Dutchess County, and Kathy Peluso, Crime Victims Services of Family Services. Kathy discussed

the common signs of elder abuse, statistics about the abusers who are largely family members, and how the Coalition helps. Once an intake is conducted, Kathy works closely with the client, and Coalition partners, referring him or her to specific services that can confidentially help the client, all with the goal of stopping the abuse. A new brochure about elder abuse will soon be published by District Attorney William Grady, with a description of services available in Dutchess County.
