New Mediators Trained to Help Resolve Conflict
The Mediation Center of Dutchess County trained new mediators at Marist College over two weekends in June.
The volunteers, who are from Wingdale, Poughkeepsie, Wappingers Falls, Dover Plains, Hopewell Junction, Rhinebeck, and Fishkill, spent 35 hours learning conflict theories, conflict and its effects, the role of the mediator, responsive listening skills, mediation ethics and standards of practice, how to document decisions as well as mediating mock cases such as workplace, landlord/tenant, neighbor, and business disputes. They will mediate in courts throughout Dutchess County. New mediator and Town of Dover Supervisor Ryan Courtien, said, "Mediation offers a viable and cost-effective opportunity for individuals and groups to take their seemingly intractable differences and create their own workable solutions. Currently, the Center works with municipal courts; I look forward to working collaboratively to see how mediation can be utilized in other parts of local government."
