World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Conference Held June 15; Sees Record Attendance

More than 145 people turned out for the Coalition on Elder Abuse’s 4th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day conference on June 15 at the Farm and Home Center in Millbrook. Jody_Kathy_Wendy_Rochelle_and_Jerry_Hutchings2 This year’s conference theme, There’s No Excuse For Elder Abuse: Joining Forces, Joining Partnerships, focused on the necessity of a multi-disciplinary team approach to elder abuse prevention and intervention. Donna Dougherty, Esq., Attorney in Charge, Legal Services for the Elderly, in the Legal/Social Work Elder Abuse Program (LEAP) at JASA, was the keynote speaker and described the multi-disciplinary team initiatives that have been successful in addressing elder abuse. The Elder Rights and Safety Award was presented to Rochelle McDonough, Crime Victim’s Specialist with the NYS Police in Millbrook, for her commitment to increasing safety and support for elder abuse victims. The Coalition on Elder Abuse in Dutchess County, under the auspices of the Mediation Center of Dutchess County, includes more than 40 agencies and individuals working together to protect elders from abuse, neglect and exploitation and to preserve the quality of their lives.
