The Mediation Center of Dutchess County provides members of the community with an opportunity to have a conversation with each other about a disagreement, a dispute, and whatever is of concern to them. Community members bring a wide variety of issues to the Center, and mediation gives them an opportunity to talk with each other with the support of an impartial third party.  Mediators are volunteers and come from a variety of professional backgrounds and life experiences. All mediators are certified by the Mediation Center and receive ongoing mediation training. Some have been volunteering at the Center for many years.

People involved in community mediation cases can be anyone from the community, including:

  • Neighbors
  • Consumers and merchants
  • Tenants and landlords
  • Acquaintances
  • Strangers
  • Employees and employers
  • Family members
  • Intimate Partners

Community mediation cases can deal with a wide variety of topics, including:

  • Personal property
  • Breach of contract
  • Interpersonal disputes

  • Bad checks

  • Personal loans

The majority of community cases are referred to the Mediation Center from city, town, and village courts and are small claims cases. We also get referrals from city and state police, social service agencies, past clients, friends, and family.
