Special Education and Early Intervention Mediation for Parents and Schools
The Mediation Center of Dutchess County is offering Special Education and Early Intervention Mediation as a resource for parents and schools to discuss a child’s educational services including an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Mediation provides an opportunity for participants to have a confidential, voluntary, conversation facilitated by an impartial mediator whose role is to help all parties communicate and make decisions. Common topics discussed in Special Education/Early Intervention Mediation include identification/classification, evaluation, educational placement, recommendations for Special Education/Early Intervention Services, and other educational issues.Issues that cannot be addressed in mediation include placement in non-approved (by NYS Education Dept.) private schools, attorney’s fees or decisions at sub-committee level that must first go to the full Committee on Special Education. There is no cost for Special Education/Early Intervention Mediation to schools or families.
